Nagano-born Tanaka developed in the ranks of Shonan Bellmare in the Greater Tokyo area and made his debut at the age of 17 in July 2020 - with current Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Shuto Machino becoming a team-mate the following year.
A season-long loan at Belgian outfit Kortrijk in 2022/23 gave Tanaka some initial experience of European football, with 15 top-flight appearances. Following his return to Japan, he signed for Sanfreece Hiroshima in December 2024 and won the 2025 Japanese Super Cup under former Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and Eintracht Frankfurt coach Michael Skibbe.
