The Chicago Cubs’ struggles this season have been a popular subject of discussion. The Cubs were able to earn a 9-3 win on Thursday, but the ball club has still underperformed overall. While they will likely look to buy at the trade deadline, the Cubs also may be willing to trade a couple of players from their MLB roster. Seiya Suzuki was recently mentioned as a trade candidate, while Matt Shaw is also a player they could look to trade. So, should the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians consider pursuing deals for the Cubs players?
Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton are both currently out with injuries. Acquiring a right-handed hitter or two at the trade deadline would be a good move for the ball club. Suzuki would strengthen their outfield depth, while Shaw can move around the field and play multiple positions.
Cleveland, meanwhile, needs more overall offense. The Guardians recently lost control of first place, as the Chicago White Sox currently lead the American League Central. While Cleveland could still win the division with their current roster, they need an offensive upgrade or two if they want to make a deep postseason run.
Shaw is only 24 years old. He has hit .240/.288/.396 this season. His numbers do not jump off the page, but the Yankees or Guardians may be interested in taking a chance on a versatile 24-year-old with multiple years of team control remaining on his contract.
Suzuki, 31, is hitting .247/.333/.409 to go along with nine home runs this year. He has had some ups and downs, but his offensive ceiling remains intriguing. He will be a free agent following the season, so it remains to be seen if the Yankees or Guardians would have interest in acquiring a half-season rental.
Suzuki is the better player right now, but Shaw’s ceiling and contract make him a valuable option as well. The Yankees and Guardians should both seriously consider pursuing a trade for the Cubs players.
