Exclusive: Brian McBride shares important advice for athletes ahead of World Cup

The FIFA World Cup has begun, and as some athletes grace the world’s largest stage for the first time, a soccer legend is sharing some tips for the future stars.

Brian McBride, who represented the United States in three FIFA World Cups: 1998, 2002, and 2006, shared what is most important for soccer stars to think about as they head into the international tournament.

“My advice to players that are playing in the World Cup for the first time, enjoy every moment,” McBride exclusively told ClutchPoints at Truly’s Tuesday, June 9 Truly Hard Seltzer event. “Certainly, you’re going to have nerves, but make those nerves bring you to focus, rather than get scatterbrained and not do your normal things to prepare for a game.”

McBride’s soccer career spans both Major League Soccer and the English Premier League. He played professionally for 17 years, and during his career he earned 95 international caps and scored 30 goals, which forwards in USMNT history. In addition to the U.S. National team, he also played for the Columbus Crew, Fulham FC, and the Chicago Fire before retiring from the sport at the end of the 2010 season.

As MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey Stadium), will host several FIFA World Cup games, including the final on July 19, McBride is using his platform to make sure soccer fans will be celebrating as the first set of games were kicked off on June 11. On Tuesday, in partnership with Truly Hard Seltzer, he was sworn in as Honorary Mayor of “Believe, USA” — which Hoboken has been renamed officially for the summer tournament in support of U.S. Soccer — inside the Truly Believe Bar.

“Fans like the ones in Hoboken bring a kind of energy you can’t miss,” said Brian McBride, USMNT legend and “Honorary Mayor of Believe, USA.” “Walking into the Truly Believe Bar brought me right back. This isn’t just about renaming a city – it’s about giving fans a place to come together and be part of something bigger.”

Additionally, Truly Hard Seltzer donated $10,000 to the Hoboken Business Alliance in support of the city’s small businesses, restaurants, and bars.

For the World Cup, Truly Hard Seltzer has released a limited edition 24-oz. Truly Wild Berry cans featuring each of the 11 select cities hosting. Designed in collaboration with U.S. Soccer, the exclusive 12-pack features flavors: Watermelon Wave, Orange Slices, Baller Berry, and Red, White & Tru.
