Hurricanes’ Nikolaj Ehlers has hilarious reaction to Game 5 only a coach’s son would have

The Carolina Hurricanes are closing in on the Stanley Cup. Carolina won Game 5 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final on Thursday night over the Vegas Golden Knights. Nikolaj Ehlers had three assists in this contest. However, it also wasn’t the prettiest game from the veteran winger.

Ehlers took two delay of game penalties on Thursday night. In both instances, he was called for lifting the puck over the glass. One of these penalties led directly to a Golden Knights goal. Overall, it was a good game, but as he mentioned after the game, Ehlers likely won’t be recalling every detail.

“I’m excited, but not excited to see my dad tonight. For those who don’t know, he’s been a hockey coach for the last 25 years,” the Hurricanes forward said, via The Hockey News writer Ryan Henkel.

Carolina’s head coach, Rod Brind’Amour, was also in a joking mood following Game 5. In regard to Ehlers, he joked that the veteran having a hockey coach in the family makes his job just a bit easier. “I’m glad his dad is a hockey coach. He’ll take care of that stuff for me,” Brind’Amour said, via Henkel.

Ehlers has come up big for the Hurricanes throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs. His three assists in Game 5 certainly show that he can play a pivotal role for Carolina. The penalties are concerning, but with a win in the back pocket, they can certainly move on.

Now, all eyes turn to Game 6. The Hurricanes head to Las Vegas with a chance to win the Stanley Cup. Carolina and Vegas take to the ice at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday night with the stakes as high as they can be.
