John Cena leaves door open for WWE return, but warns it’d be ‘financial suicide’

Last year during the Dec. 2025 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, John Cena retired from professional wrestling. Cena tapped out to Gunther and finished his in-ring career on a high note.

However, despite finishing up with WWE, Cena has continued to appear multiple times after that. He hosted WWE WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas, Nevada, before making another return at WWE Backlash, where he announced the John Cena Classic tournament.

Despite his on-screen appearances, Cena has remained firm about not wrestling again. Recently, speaking to US Weekly, Cena addressed the chances of coming back. Instead of completely brushing away the chances, Cena left the door open for a possible return and revealed the financial load it would require to bring him back.

“I hate speaking in absolutes … “Never” is a strong word. It would be financial suicide for someone to court me in a position where I would have another match, and I truly mean that. So if you’re in the business of torching currency, that’s the only way to get me back in the ring. Aside from that, the reason “one more match” resonated so well for me, first of all, I got to express to the fans of how fulfilled I felt when I retired,” Cena added.

“Second of all, the interest of an audience being like, “We want to see you again!” gets me excited for the new idea of the John Cena Classic. We can do this again. I’ll be there. It’ll be fan-forward and fan-first. I won’t be so focused on, “Man, this match means everything to me. I’ve got to make sure I give all I have when the music plays and I’m under the lights.”

Cena further explained that being retired lets him watch other performers and be the ambassador for the John Cena Classic event. The 17-time World Champion is excited to see the tournament get live and received more confirmed details, such as a city and a date. While he is aware that fans want him back, Cena now wants others to do the things he can no longer do.
