The season started well for Freddy Peralta, and the New York Mets got off to a great start. But things have spiraled out of control, and the Mets are 30-38 and in last place in the NL East. Despite the bad start, teammates said he has had an impact on the locker room, according to Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports.
“He made this place his house right away. He’s fitting in with all the players. He’s bringing the energy,” Juan Soto told Thosar.
This is ironic considering Peralta is reportedly on the trade block, despite just arriving in Queens. So far, it has not been the best start for the pitcher. Peralta is 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA in 14 starts. Additionally, because of the bad start, the rumors surrounding a trade are getting louder. Other teams have discussed a trade for Peralta with the Mets.
Despite that, it has not changed how his teammates view him. Overall, the vibe has continued to be good in the Mets’ locker room, and Soto pointed out the type of guy Peralta is.
“He’s inviting guys to breakfast. He’s always open for anything with his teammates. He’s always planning something. He’s always had time for everything. It’s really cool to see, when you see a guy that’s been in this league so long, and the way he’s handled himself, even when he’s had a rough start to the season, he’s still being the same guy. It’s really tough to find a guy like that,” Soto added.
For now, Peralta remains a Met. If he remains, he could continue building chemistry with the team and possibly eventually bring it back into contention.
