Despite all of the rumors surrounding his hiatus, CM Punk will return to WWE, and it could come with a change to the Friday Night SmackDown roster.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer (via Fightful) reports that Punk is expected to join the SmackDown roster upon his eventual return. A date for his return hasn’t been shared, though.
It has been a while since WWE fans last saw Punk. His last appearance was during the Monday Night RAW after WrestleMania on Apr. 20.
Who will CM Punk feud with upon his WWE return from hiatus?

Meltzer also reported that Punk is expected to feud with Cody Rhodes, the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion, upon his return.
They have teased it several times, including them being the final two entrants in the 2024 Royal Rumble, which the “American Nightmare” won.
Additionally, they teamed up at the 2025 Survivor Series: WarGames PLE. They were part of the same team that lost to The Vision.
This would be a marquee feud for WWE, especially if it leads into SummerSlam. Rhodes is coming off a brief feud with Gunther. He defeated the “Ring General” at Clash in Italy to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Punk would provide something fresh for the “American Nightmare.” Rhodes regained the title from Drew McIntyre in March 2026, and he has continued his reign since.
Meanwhile, Punk is coming off a WrestleMania 42 feud against Roman Reigns. The “Voice of the Voiceless” lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 42, ending his reign after 169 days.
After making an appearance during the RAW after WrestleMania 42, Punk went on a hiatus. It’s unknown why he hasn’t been present. However, he should be back sooner rather than later. He will add another marquee Superstar to the SmackDown roster.
