With the NBA Draft a little less than two weeks away, there is one player who might see his stock jump up in the wake of New York Knicks’ star Jalen Brunson’s incredible playoff run, and that’s Darius Acuff Jr. Built like Brunson as a smaller, scoring point guard, Acuff is potentially changing the landscape of a league that’s gotten bigger in terms of guards.
Darius Acuff himself has taken notice of Jalen Brunson’s run to the NBA Finals, and he believes that any team that selects him in the upcoming draft is getting a player with a similar mentality, as per Myron Medcalf of ESPN.
“We feel like we can go out there and play against anybody,” Acuff said. “I feel like I can hopefully do the same thing one day and it’s definitely inspiring to see.”
Acuff is a projected high lottery pick with it being almost impossible that he slips past No. 7 and the Sacramento Kings, as per ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel. Although it is not a given that he even still be on the board when the Kings are up. It’s entirely possible that either the LA Clippers at No. 5 or the Brooklyn Nets at No. 6 select him.
In any case, it’s going to be a vast difference from Brunson who had to wait until the second round to hear his name called. NBA scouts are not going to make that same mistake twice.
“I think Acuff can open some eyes in the NBA,” one anonymous Western Conference scout said via Medcalf. “Brunson has kind of brought back the smaller, scoring, tough physical point guard that can lead a team. And Acuff has some of those traits. He might even have a little more.”
