With Baker Mayfield set to be a free agent after the season, there has already been controversy stirred up about his future with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, if it’s up to head coach Todd Bowles, Mayfield won’t be going anywhere.
Bowles said that there was, “no question,” about his want to coach Mayfield beyond 2026. He made it clear that when he thinks of the Buccaneers’ offense, the perfect option at quarterback is already on the roster, via Jenna Laine of ESPN.
“Baker’s all business. He’s all about business,” Bowles said. “The contract stuff takes care of itself. That’s the business side of it that you don’t see, that everybody has to deal with, and I’m sure he’ll take care of it, but it doesn’t affect his play.”
“Baker’s a true pro,” he continued. “I don’t think there’s any disappointment whatsoever. I mean, he loves it here. We love him here. The contract stuff takes care of itself, whether it’s the quarterback or any other position that comes up — those things get worked out over time. You just concentrate on what we got to concentrate on, on the field, and he’s been great right there.”
Mayfield has gone 27-24 as a starter since his arrival to Tampa Bay in 2023. He has been named to two Pro Bowls, throwing for 12,237 yards, 95 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. Furthermore, the Buccaneers have won the NFC South twice under his watch.
However, the only time Mayfield wasn’t a Pro Bowler and the Bucs weren’t in the playoffs was 2025. In a what have you done lately for me league, the quarterback will now once again need to prove himself. Bowles is confident he will with flying colors.
