While the talk of the sports world has been about the ruling of Texas Tech football quarterback Brendan Sorsby and how he’ll be eligible to play in the upcoming season despite the immense gambling scandal, the conversation turns to the Big Ten. As the debacle of a situation with the Texas Tech football player in Sorsby will continue, the latest reporting answers whether the conference will stop people from not playing the school.
There has been talk of schools not wanting to schedule the Red Raiders as a form of protest for Sorsby to continue playing, despite breaking thousands of NCAA gambling violations. However, according to Ralph D. Russo, the Big Ten “is not expected to implement a mandate that would prohibit schools from scheduling Texas Tech.”
“The Big Ten is not expected to implement a mandate that would prohibit schools from scheduling Texas Tech, two people involved in the discussions told The Athletic on Thursday,” Russo wrote.
“Big Ten athletic directors were scheduled to meet with commissioner Tony Petitti later Thursday,” Russo continued. “Some in the conference wanted to consider a league-wide ban on playing the Red Raiders across all sports in the wake of a Texas judge clearing the way for Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby to play this season after the NCAA deemed him permanently ineligible.”
More on the situation with Texas Tech football’s Brendan Sorsby
After the ruling from a Texas state judge that Sorsby can play in 2026, there were such schools as Nebraska, a member of the Big Ten conference, and Georgia, a member of the SEC, that they wouldn’t schedule contests with the Red Raiders.
“On Monday, not long after the court order was released, top administrators at Big Ten member Nebraska and SEC member Georgia informed their coaches that they would not be permitted to schedule games against Texas Tech going forward,” Russo wrote.
At any rate, while the Big Ten will let other schools handle their own situations, it remains to be seen if there are further developments dealing with the Texas Tech football program and quarterback Brendan Sorsby for the upcoming season.
