Although the New York Knicks own a commanding 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals over the San Antonio Spurs, each game has been incredibly close throughout. In fact, this year’s Finals are eerily similar to the 1973 Finals.
NBA Communications shared on X that all four matchups in this year’s NBA Finals have been within just four points in the final minute of play. The last time that happened came in 1973, with the Knicks winning the championship that year.
“Each of the first four games of the NBA Finals between the Knicks and Spurs has been within four points in the final minute of regulation,” said NBA Communications. “The last Finals series to begin with four such games was in 1973, when the Knicks faced the Lakers.”
Game 4 had no business being as close as it was. The Spurs dominated the first half of the contest. However, the Knicks found a way to claw their way back and earn a 107-106 victory after being down by as much as 29 points.
OG Anunoby became a hero in these Finals. Especially in Game 4, where he made a key defensive stop on De’Aaron Fox, then turned around and tipped Jalen Brunson’s missed three-point attempt in for two points, which ended up being the game-winning bucket.
1973 was the last time the Knicks won the championship. It’s been a long time coming for this franchise, and the club is now just one win away from ending the dry spell. New York will have a chance to win the title on Saturday in Game 5 in San Antonio.
