Devils rumors: The AAV on Nico Hischier’s next contract, per Insider

In disappointing fashion, the New Jersey Devils failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, bringing into question the kind of moves that new general manager Sunny Mehta would have to make in order to ensure his club could start making postseason runs again in short order.

One important matter of business that Mehta is faced with is the contract status of captain Nico Hischer, who is set to enter the final season of his 7 year, $50,570,000 contract that carries an annual salary cap hit of $7,250,000. Hischier is also eligible to sign an extension once the calendar turns to July later this summer.

Hischier, who has been involved in trade rumors in recent months, could potentially sign an extension with the Devils that pays him an annual salary of between $11 and $13 million, according to a new report from former Devils goaltender and current NHL Insider Kevin Weekes.

“Although talks are ongoing, my speculation is that C Hischier and NJDevils will land on a medium term contract extension somewhere between 11M- 13M range,” Weekes wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Additionally, according to NHL Insider David Pagnotta, the Devils and Hischier are working toward an extension.

“The New Jersey Devils and star centre Nico Hischier have started contract negotiations and while he cannot officially sign an extension until July 1, at the earliest, talks are trending in the right direction,” Pagnotta wrote via The Fourth Period. “Hischier, 27, is entering the final year of his seven-year, $50.75 million contract and owns a 10-team no-trade list as part of his deal.”

So far in his NHL career, Hischer has tallied 199 goals and 289 assists in 609 games played.
