Before their run to the NBA Finals, the New York Knicks have often been mentioned in rumors as a potential trade suitor for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, with the team being one win away from an NBA championship, that chatter has seemingly dissipated. And count former NBA star Magic Johnson as one of the prominent voices arguing that the Knicks do not need to trade for Giannis.
During a recent appearance on ‘First Take,’ Magic Johnson explained to Stephen A. Smith why the Knicks are better off keeping the current team together and forgetting about a potential Giannis trade pursuit.
“I don’t wanna hear no talk about Giannis, or no other player coming to this team. This is a great team. I’ve watched a lot of basketball. The way these guys love each other, play for each other, pull for one another, you’re not gonna see this anywhere else. The grit, the toughness, that’s how they beat you. Together,” Johnson said.
“Now, if you trade for Giannis, how many dudes you got to give up just to get him? It’s a different team now. The whole team changes.”
A recent rumor report this week suggested that the Bucks have been closely monitoring the NBA Finals in the event that if the Knicks somehow manage to choke away the series, they would become much more interested in a Giannis pursuit.
Earlier rumors from the offseason suggested that Karl-Anthony Towns would be of interest to the Bucks in a potential deal. But with other teams jumping into the fray and the Miami Heat reportedly among the front-runners, it doesn’t appear that the Knicks are still in the Giannis sweepstakes.
