Almost nothing has gone right for the Boston Red Sox this season and they find themselves in last place in the American League East with a brutal 27-39 record. They were a Wild Card team a year ago but repeating that status appears to be a pipe dream in 2026 because they have very little punch in their lineup and have played so badly at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox are used to dominating in their classic ballpark, but they go into their home series Friday night with a 10-21 record when they play in front of their own fans.
An injury to Roman Anthony has hurt their offensive production, but former Major League pitcher Adam Ottavino believes the team put an exorbitant amount of pressure on the youngster and he has been unable to live up to the hype. Ottavino, who pitched for the Red Sox in 2021, made his feelings clear in an interview with MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.
Injuries have hurt Anthony’s development
Anthony was thought of as the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball when the Red Sox promoted him from Triple-A Worcester last season. He flashed his talent after a bit of a slow start and was a great fit in the lineup before an injury sidelined him for the final month of the season.
A wrist injury has slowed him this year and has been out since May 4. There is no definitive timeline for his return at this point.
The Red Sox did not bring back 3rd baseman and leader Alex Bregman in the offseason and it seemed clear that the Red Sox expected Anthony to take over as the team’s key offensive producer in 2026. He slashed .292/.396/.463 in 71 games last year while hitting 8 home runs and driving in 32 runs. Prior to his injury, Anthony was hitting .229 with 1 home runa and 5 RBI.
