As fans have been awaiting any injury update on Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz, who sustained a hamstring injury on May 31, manager Terry Francona has positive news that fans will want to hear. This latest injury update on the Reds’ shortstop will show that an injury return could come sooner rather than later.
Speaking on Friday, Francona would reveal how follow-up MRI scans on Cruz’s hamstring looked, even going as far as to say that he is “90 percent healed.”
“He got, I’d say, very good news,” Francona said, via MLB.com. “He’s about 90 percent healed, which is fantastic. He’s upping the activity — the intensity and the amount of it — and then we’ll let him go over the weekend and then we’ll kind of put our heads together again on Sunday and see where we think he’s at.”
In regard to when he can return, Francona would say that Cruz “wanted to play tonight,” but the manager would express how the team needs “to try and temper that sometimes” since they don’t want to cause any complications.
Reds’ Elly De La Cruz is determined to get back as soon as possible
So far this season with the Reds, Cruz has recorded a .280 batting average to go along with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs in 58 games as he has been missed from Cincinnati’s lineup. Cruz’s determination is no doubt noticed, as after being placed on the 10-day injured list for the first time in his career, he wanted to expedite the process.
“He actually wanted to go work out. We told him if he was going to work out, he had to come in here so we could keep an eye on him,” Francona said. “Elly is kind of amazing. I believe that you could almost will yourself [to heal quickly] sometimes. I think there’s people like that, and he’s certainly one of them.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen when the Reds star, Cruz, will return as the team starts a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night, as they are 32-35, putting them last in the NL Central.
