The New Orleans Pelicans have gone back-to-back seasons without reaching the NBA playoffs. While speculation has grown that the club has no interest in trading Trey Murphy III, rumors suggest that Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars is completely changing his stance.
Reports indicate that the Pelicans are taking calls regarding Murphy’s availability, according to insider Marc Stein. From the sounds of it, New Orleans is potentially interested in moving the 25-year-old forward for a big haul.
“For the first time since hiring Joe Dumars as Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, the Pelicans are taking calls and listening to trade offers for Trey Murphy III, per Marc Stein,” said ClutchPoints on X. “The Pels reportedly have ‘established a very high trade threshold’ for Murphy.”
After going 26-56 this year, changes would be welcomed in New Orleans. However, the club does not have a first-round pick for the 2026 NBA Draft, as that selection (No. 8 overall) belongs to the Atlanta Hawks due to the 2025 NBA Draft day trade where the Pelicans sent their 2026 first-round pick and the 2025 No. 23 overall pick to Atlanta to move up and select Derik Queen 13th overall.
Joe Dumars and the Pelicans have been adamant about not trading Trey Murphy III throughout the offseason. But this year’s draft class might be too good for the front office to pass up, hence the rumors that Murphy could be available via trade.
The five-year veteran broke out as a star for the Pelicans in the 2024-25 campaign, serving as a high-caliber two-way player. His 2025-26 season is arguably the best year of his career yet, as Murphy averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds (career-high), 3.8 assists (career-high), and 1.5 steals per game (career-high) while shooting 47.0% from the field and hitting 37.9% of his three-point attempts.
