Cardinals option former top prospect after hitting .194

The St. Louis Cardinals announced multiple roster moves on Friday. Notably, former top prospect Nolan Gorman was optioned to Triple-A. Meanwhile, infielder Blaze Jordan and right-handed pitcher Chris Roycroft were promoted to the big league ball club while right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins was also optioned to Triple-A. Infielder Ramon Urias was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

The Cardinals had refused to give up on Gorman throughout the season despite his struggles. While they are still not giving up on him, they are going to see if he can figure things out at the Triple-A level.

Gorman appeared in 62 games with the big league team before Friday’s announcement. He hit .194/.279/.318 during that span to go along with seven home runs and four doubles.

The infielder made his debut at the MLB level in 2022. He featured the ceiling of a star. While Gorman has displayed potential over the years — he hit 27 home runs to go along with an .805 OPS in 2023 — the 26-year-old has been unable to find overall consistency.

Perhaps Gorman will get back on track at Triple-A.

As for the Cardinals, they are set to play the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. St. Louis will enter the game with a 37-29 overall record. The ball club is in second place in the National League Central standings as they continue to upset expectations. Meanwhile, the Twins are 31-39 and in third place in the American League Central standings.

First pitch for the Cardinals and Twins game on Friday night is scheduled for 8:10 PM EST at Target Field in Minnesota.
