Yankees’ big Max Fried injury update comes with a catch

The New York Yankees placed Max Fried on the 15-day IL in mid-May. While he is technically eligible to be reinstated from the IL, the 10-year veteran is still dealing with issues with his left elbow. However, on Friday, the club received good news in Fried’s update.

Reports indicate that the 32-year-old left-hander’s latest MRI revealed his left elbow is healing, according to Greg Joyce of the New York Post Sports. Fried will be participating in light bullpen work on Saturday, but he is not close to returning.

“Max Fried’s latest round of imaging showed enough healing in his elbow that he has been cleared to throw a light bullpen tomorrow,” reported Joyce. “Still a ways away, but progress.”

The three-time All-Star has been out due to a bone bruise in his left elbow. He suffered the injury in the Yankees’ 7-0 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on May 13. Fried was removed early from the contest and was placed on the 15-day IL two days later.

New York has been competitive this season and looks like a potential contender for the postseason in October. Having Max Fried back on the mound would certainly help things, though. But rushing him back would be a mistake.

Through 61.2 innings pitched so far this season, Fried owns a 3.21 ERA and 1.005 WHIP with 50 strikeouts. While he’s been out, the Yankees have relied on a starting rotation consisting of Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers, Carlos Rodon, and Gerrit Cole. Weathers got the start for Friday’s contest against the Toronto Blue Jays.
