Twins’ top prospect Walker Jenkins gets massive injury update

A shockingly fragile American League could create the largest Wild Card race ever. Although the inferior Minnesota Twins (31-39) are only four games out of a playoff slot, the organization would be wise to prioritize the big picture over a seemingly improbable chance of playing October baseball. Walker Jenkins takes up plenty of space in that frame. MLB’s No. 11-ranked prospect is expected to join the Twins at some point this season, but first, he has to get off the injured list.

The latest news is promising. Jenkins could start a rehab assignment with Single-A Fort Myers on Saturday, per Aaron Gleeman. Once he clears that final step, the 21-year-old outfielder will rejoin the Triple-A St. Paul Saints. He is working his way back from a shoulder issue that has kept him out of action since May 4.

LSU phenom Paul Skenes was the main attraction heading into the 2023 MLB Draft, and rightly so by the looks of it, but Jenkins came in with a plethora of talent in his own right. The No. 5 overall pick is waiting for the opportunity to leave an imprint in The Show. He is still honing his craft in the minor leagues, however.

Jenkins has a .256 batting average with two home runs, nine RBIs, six doubles, five stolen bases, a .396 on-base percentage, .389 slugging percentage and .785 OPS through 111 plate appearances for St. Paul. He will try to raise those numbers once he returns to the capital city.

Twins fans are eager to see him take the next step in his development, for they are growing weary of bad baseball. Unless Minnesota can exploit a weak AL, it will likely miss the playoffs for a third straight year. Walker Jenkins hopes to be a key part of the solution in the near future.
