Liverpool Track Joel Ordonez as Defensive Rebuild Gathers Pace

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild under Andoni Iraola appears to be moving quickly, and Joel Ordonez is now firmly among the names to watch.

Caught Offside reports that Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea are all showing interest in the Club Brugge centre-back, with the 22-year-old viewed across Europe as a player ready for a significant move.

The article states: “The talented 22-year-old is well known by Premier League clubs,” and that “a long list of English teams have scouted him on more than one occasion in the last year or so.”

For Liverpool, that detail matters. This does not sound like a casual link or a player suddenly pushed into the market. Ordonez has clearly been monitored over a sustained period, and with Ibrahima Konate leaving once his contract expires at the end of this month, the need for defensive reinforcement is obvious.

Jeremy Jacquet’s £60m arrival from Rennes gives Liverpool one major addition, but it does not fully solve the issue. Virgil van Dijk is ageing, Joe Gomez’s long-term role remains uncertain, and the squad requires greater depth, pace and succession planning.

Tottenham Lead Race for €45m Defender

Caught Offside claims Tottenham are currently ahead in the race, reporting: “There’s the feeling, though, that Tottenham are currently leading the race for his signature as they look for defensive signings.”

That is significant because Spurs are also looking at Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke. The article adds that Brighton are “playing hardball over his transfer fee,” which could push Tottenham towards Ordonez as a more attainable alternative.

At around €45m, Ordonez represents a market opportunity. He is young, already experienced in European football, and physically profiles like the type of defender Premier League clubs increasingly prioritise.

Liverpool will not be alone. Chelsea, Newcastle and Juventus are also mentioned, with Caught Offside stating: “I’ve been told his availability could also put the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle, and Juventus on alert, but Spurs and Liverpool are the main names to watch for now.”

Liverpool Need More Than One Centre-Back

Liverpool’s situation is different from Tottenham’s. Spurs may be searching for another defensive option. Liverpool are entering a structural reset.

Konate’s exit removes one of the squad’s most physically dominant defenders. Jacquet’s arrival is important, but relying on one new signing to reshape the back line would be risky. Ordonez could give Iraola another aggressive, developing centre-back with room to grow.

Caught Offside also notes that “a top young talent like Ordonez could also be ideal to eventually replace the ageing Virgil van Dijk.”

That is the long-term question Liverpool must answer. Van Dijk remains a major figure, but the club cannot afford to wait until decline forces the issue. The best succession plans are built before the emergency arrives.

Transfer Race Could Move Quickly

The key issue now is timing. Tottenham appear well placed, Chelsea and Newcastle have the resources to complicate the race, and Juventus offer European pedigree.

Liverpool must decide whether Ordonez is a priority or merely one name on a broader list. At €45m, he will not stay available for long if multiple clubs firm up interest.

For Iraola, this summer is about building a defence that can handle his demands. Ordonez may not be the finished product, but he looks like exactly the type of profile Liverpool cannot afford to ignore.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

From a Liverpool perspective, this is exactly the kind of link that makes sense.

Ordonez is young, physically strong, already tested in Europe and available at a price that feels realistic in the current market. After losing Konate for nothing, Liverpool cannot afford to be passive. That departure leaves a proper hole in the squad, not just in terms of ability, but in terms of athleticism and defensive presence.

Jacquet arriving from Rennes is exciting, especially at £60m, but Liverpool still need more. One signing does not rebuild a centre-back department. If anything, Jacquet should be the start of the process, not the conclusion.

The interesting part is Tottenham being described as ahead. That should sharpen minds at Anfield. Liverpool have spent too many windows watching smart targets move elsewhere before later being praised as obvious fits. Ordonez feels like one of those players who could look expensive now and sensible in two years.

Chelsea, Newcastle and Juventus being involved adds pressure, but Liverpool should still be attractive. Iraola needs defenders who can cope with space, defend aggressively and play forward. Ordonez looks like he fits that direction.

If Liverpool are serious about refreshing this squad, this is the kind of deal they should be pushing hard to win.
