According to a report from SPORT, Barcelona have completed the renewal of La Masia striker Oscar Gistau, extending his stay at the club until 2028 with an option to prolong the agreement by a further year.

The move reinforces the club’s belief in one of the academy’s highly rated attacking prospects despite a difficult period disrupted by injuries.

Notably, the renewal is part of Barcelona’s ongoing work to secure the futures of several young talents.

Gistau has long been viewed as a player with significant potential within Barcelona’s academy system.

While La Masia has consistently produced elite midfielders, defenders and wingers over the years, natural centre-forwards have been far less common.

That makes players like Gistau particularly valuable to the club’s long-term planning.

As such, Barcelona were keen to avoid any uncertainty surrounding the striker’s future, with his previous contract due to expire in 2027.

The new deal extends his commitment by an additional year and gives the club further control over the development of a player they believe can still make an impact in the coming years.

Series of bad luck

It must be remembered that the last two seasons have been frustrating for the young forward.

A series of injury setbacks significantly disrupted his development and limited his opportunities with Barça Atlètic.

During the most recent campaign, he was only able to make seven appearances in Segunda RFEF due to two major injuries.

For many young players, long spells on the sidelines can change how a club views their future. That, however,  has not been the case with Gistau.

Despite all that, Barcelona have remained convinced by his potential and wanted the renewal to reflect that confidence.

The striker has already returned to training and spent the final stages of the season rebuilding his fitness after months of frustration.

In fact, as reported before, the striker is expected to begin pre-season training with Hansi Flick’s first-team group on 13 July alongside several players from Barça Atlètic, which will give him enough exposure to leave the setbacks behind.
